Celebrating Dr. David S. Hogness’s Legacy: Two GENETICS Articles Honoring our Founding Faculty Member’s Pioneering Work
We are pleased to announce the publication of two articles in GENETICS commemorating the 100th birthday of Dr. David S. Hogness (November 17, 1925), one of our department's founding faculty members. The first paper presents Dr. Hogness's autobiographical account written in 1992, sharing insights from his remarkable scientific career that transformed the molecular analysis of genes, genomes, and animal development. The second paper celebrates Dr. Hogness's foundational 1970s research on ecdysone hormone regulation in Drosophila development. His lab's innovative cloning and mapping of cDNAs to polytene chromosomes made it possible to relate the timing of developmental gene expression to the physical and genetic map of the chromosome and revealed how hormonal signals control gene expression during insect metamorphosis. These publications honor Dr. Hogness's lasting contributions to molecular biology and preserve important scientific history for future generations.
