Resources

Beckman Center offers many computer resources for Biochemistry Department faculty, students, and staff. A brief overview of computing services is available here.
The complete listing of Beckman Center Computing Resources and Services is available at the CMGM Computing web pages.
Network Connectivity
Every desk at Beckman Center is within range of at least one 100Mb ethernet connection to the Stanford University network. Students and postdocs are welcome to bring their personal computers and connect them to the network. Doing this requires a simple configuration and registration process.
Networking Help for the Biochemistry Department
Contact Bob Tucker, Local Network Administrator, for help with any networking issue via e-mail.
Network Accounts
CMGM Account
The CMGM acount is an integral part of computing at the Biochemistry Department. Besides providing email services, the CMGM account allows 50MB of disk space on the CMGM server and access to valuable commercial software that is licensed by the Bioinformatics Resource under the Keyserver program. This includes office productivity software (Microsoft Office, MeetingMaker), graphics and illustration (Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, Deneba Canvas), Biochemistry-related software (DNAStar, PAUP, Sequencher, MacVector), Stanford University site-licensed software, access to CMGM-hosted web databases, molecular modeling software, and many more. Sign up for a CMGM account.
CMGM Account Services
Additional help with CMGM account services is available from Lee Kozar (), Manager of the Bioinformatics Resource.
Leland Email Account
A Leland account (also referred to as a SUNet ID) provides access to Stanford University-wide computing resources, including an email account @stanford.edu and internet access via modem connections. The Leland account does not provide access to Biochemistry-specific computing resources and services. Signup for a Leland Account.
Leland Account Requirements
In order to sign up for a Leland account, you must already have a Stanford University PIN number. If you do not know your Stanford University PIN number and are a student, faculty or permanent staff member, please contact ITSS at (650) 723-6161. Visiting scholars or temporary staff should contact Susan Parker, Assistant Director of Finance and Administration, in room B400 in Beckman Center to arrange for a Sponsored Leland Account.
Mailing Lists
The Biochemistry Department Mailing List is used for announcements pertaining to the Biochemistry Department. After you have obtained a CMGM and/or Leland account, sign up for the Biochemistry Department Mailing List.
Individual labs often have their own mailing list. Contact your lab's Research Assistant for information about these lists.
Software
Commercial software is provided by the Bioinformatics Resource via the Keyserver Program. Under this program, specially licensed commercial software and site-licensed software is available to CMGM community members and may be downloaded to individual computers. Keyserver Software Web Pages.
Licensing Policy
The University strictly prohibits unlawful copying of licensed software.
Keyserver Software
Keyserver software is specially-licensed, commercial software available only to CMGM members. It is protected by Keyaccess client software (required) and often requires access to a network connection.
