Events at Stanford
Seminar ProgramsThe Department of Biochemistry hosts a biweekly seminar series. Seminars are at 4 PM on Wednesdays, alternating with the Developmental Biology and Genetics seminar programs. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows select and sponsor several of the seminar speakers. Graduate students are expected to attend all of the Biochemistry Department-sponsored seminars. This ensures broad training within our graduate program. Lectures by Students and Postdoctoral TraineesAn important aspect of the training of every graduate student is the development of speaking skills. Opportunities are offered for trainees to speak about their ongoing research in a seminar setting at group meetings, conferences and the annual departmental research conference each fall. Journal Clubs(partial list):Microbial Data ClubThe Microbial Data Club is an informal gathering of approximately 50 graduate students, postdocs and faculty who have a research interest in prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes. The “Bug Club” meets the second Thursday of every month from 6-7:30 PM in the Developmental Biology library. Dinner is provided. Two talks of about 20-30 minutes are presented and there is plenty of time for questions. In the past year, participants from the following departments have taken part: Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Developmental Biology, Genetics, and Microbiology and Immunology. For further information please contact the Dev Bio Office at (650) 725-7662. Stanford Fly and Worm ClubThe Stanford Fly and Worm Club meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6 PM in the Developmental Biology department library, room B302. Two talks of approximately 30 minutes about ongoing research in Drosophila and C. elegans development are presented. Ten labs campus wide participate and participants not from fly and worm labs are also welcome to attend. For further information please contact the Dev Bio Office at (650) 725-7662. Molecular BiophysicsStanford research groups with molecular interests gather on the second Wednesday evening a month and listen to two talks of approximately 30 minutes about ongoing research, with a break for beer and pizza. Talks run from 5:15 to 8:00 PM . All interested researchers are encouraged to attend regularly. For a current schedule or further information contact Kathleen Guan, kguan@stanford.edu, (650) 723-7576. Bay Area RNA Club The Bay Area RNA Club meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. on the UCSF campus. Three 30-minute talks are presented each month, with speakers from over 20 Bay Area labs. Pizza and beer are served and all are welcome to attend. Bay Area Research on the Cytoskeleton (BARC!)BARC! meets at 7:30 PM on the last Wednesday of each month at the UCSF campus. Three 30-minute talks on current cytoskeleton research are presented by researchers from Stanford, UCSF, Berkeley, UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz. Refreshments are provided and all are welcome. Meetings are held in 122 Wheeler Hall, UC-Berkeley. For further information contact Andrea Dose, acdose@socrates.berkeley.edu. |
